Mentoring Black Nurses Toward Success

Mentoring Black Nurses Towards Success creates mentorship support for undergraduate Black nursing students and DUHS Black clinical staff nurses. Undergraduate nursing students are paired with a DUHS clinical staff nurse mentor to receive guidance from the clinical staff nurse mentor with the intent to assist them with preparedness for clinicals, internships, application for job and overall professional development. Clinical staff nurse mentees are paired with School of Nursing faculty or DUHS nurse leader to receive assistance with developing career interests and strategies to achieve professional development goals. 2022 Nursing Academic Expo | March 30, 2022

This Expo held on March 30, 2022 and rotated between four É«¿Ø´«Ã½ locations including DUSON, DRH, DRAH, and PDC. This was open to all É«¿Ø´«Ã½ Health Nurses and included nursing schools from across North Carolina that offer BSN, MSN, DNP, CRNA, and PhD programs. Participants learned about RN to BSN programs; benefits of an advanced degree; how to choose a school; differences of online, on-campus and hybrid programs; financial considerations; and how É«¿Ø´«Ã½ can help. Approximately 95 participants attended the expo. Over 100 staff nurses attended.

Mitigating the Madness

Since 2017, DUHS, in partnership with DUSON, has offered this 3-part evidence-based practice (EBP) series, which includes hands-on courses and mentorship for (1) Approaches to Clinical Inquiry, (2) Approaches to Project Development and Implementation, and (3) Approaches to Dissemination. Additionally, in 2021, the inaugural cohort of EBP Fellows were selected to participate in a 12-month mentorship in which nurses and other healthcare disciplines develop a project related to the strategic plan of DUHS.

ABSN Perioperative elective

As the perioperative workforce begins to enter retirement age, there was an identified need to develop a pipeline for new graduate nurses to enter into this specialty. Working with the partnership, two electives were developed that are taught by a DUSON faculty member and perioperative experts from DUHS. Since Fall 2017, perioperative electives have been offered for third and fourth semester ABSN students. Over 150 students have taken the electives since its inception, with several going on to work in the perioperative arena after graduation.

É«¿Ø´«Ã½ Nurse Extern (DNE) Program

Beginning in 2017, DUSON ABSN students have had the opportunity to participate in the É«¿Ø´«Ã½ Nurse Extern PNA program. Students are paired with a float pool nurse and must complete 72-80 clinical hours during the DNE program. After completion, they have the option of staying on as a part-time float pool PNA. Approximately 10-15 students participate in this program each year. Focus groups with students who participated in the DNE program highlighted that the experience increased their confidence in the clinical setting and improved knowledge.

Patient Service Aid Role

É«¿Ø´«Ã½ to the needs of the health system from the COVID-19 pandemic, DUSON students were able to serve in Patient Service Aid (PSA) roles. In these roles, they were symptom screeners and PPE observers. After symptom screeners and PPE observers were no longer needed, this role was maintained, with students offering assistance to the inpatient units. Over 30 students have participated in this role.

This Expo held on April 6, 2018, at the Brier Creek Country Club in Raleigh, NC, was open to all É«¿Ø´«Ã½ Health Nurses and included nursing schools from across North Carolina that offer BSN, MSN, DNP, CRNA and PhD programs. Participants learned about RN to BSN programs; benefits of an advanced degree; how to choose a school; differences of line, on-campus and hybrid programs; financial considerations; and how É«¿Ø´«Ã½ can help. Approximately 40 participants attended the expo. .

On September 20, 2017, the É«¿Ø´«Ã½ Advancement of Nursing Center of Excellence (DANCE), a partnership between É«¿Ø´«Ã½ and É«¿Ø´«Ã½ University Health System (DUHS), held a "Periop Session."

Mitigating the Madness | March 2, 2017

On March 2, 2017, the É«¿Ø´«Ã½ Advancement of Nursing Center of Excellence (DANCE), a partnership between É«¿Ø´«Ã½ and É«¿Ø´«Ã½ University Health System (DUHS), held the "Mitigating the Madness: Approaches to Clinical Inquiry Evidence-based Practice Workshop. The first in a series of evidence-based practice (EBP) workshops was very successful, with 32 nurses from DUHS attending and 10 more nurses on the waitlist for the next offering. To attend, nurses with an idea for an evidence-based practice project applied and garnered support from their managers. During the workshop, nurses were paired with EBP coaches that assisted them with developing their project and searching for supporting literature. Several members of DANCE, as well as librarians, presented at this workshop, including how to format a PICOT question and how to complete a literature search. View the flyer, schedule and .
